Crude sets most of the diesel price, but not the part that moves fastest: when distillate stocks run below the 5-year average the refining margin widens and diesel at the pump climbs whatever crude does. Days of supply is the tighter read of the two.

EIA Weekly Petroleum Status Report for the week ending Sep 18, released Sep 23; the next is out Wednesday, Sep 30, at 10:30 am ET. Distillate fuel oil covers on-highway diesel and heating oil. Days of supply is ending stocks over product supplied; the 5-year average is the same week of the five prior years.
