About Star of the West

Star of the West Milling Company, established in 1870 by Johann Matthias Hubinger in Frankenmuth, Michigan, began as a steam-powered flour mill. The Hubinger family's milling heritage spanned over 200 years in Germany before their American venture. The company's name honors the "Star of the West," a merchant steamship notable for its role during the Civil War. In 1903, local farmers acquired the mill, leading to the construction of a new facility in 1911 at the intersection of Hubinger and Tuscola Streets, where operations continue today. By 1929, the enterprise was incorporated as Star of the West Milling Company.

Over the years, Star of the West has expanded significantly, now operating five flour mills across four states, more than 30 grain elevators, and five bean processing facilities. The company's product range includes flour, dry edible beans, food-grade soybeans, and ready-to-eat wheat flakes. Notably, it is among the few U.S. millers specializing in soft white winter wheat flour, a key ingredient in various food products. With a daily milling capacity of 33,400 hundredweights (approximately 3.34 million pounds), it ranks as the 11th largest flour miller in the nation.

Committed to sustainability, Star of the West collaborates closely with farmers to promote environmentally responsible practices. Its agronomy division, comprising over 30 Certified Crop Advisors, provides guidance on sustainable farming techniques. The company also participates in initiatives like the USDA's Climate Smart Commodities Program, supporting growers of wheat, dry beans, and food-grade soybeans in adopting conservation practices.

Community engagement is a cornerstone of Star of the West's operations. The company and its employees contribute time, resources, and financial support to various local initiatives. Efforts include establishing the Miracle of Life barn at the Huron County Fair, volunteering at Project RED (Rural Education Development), and donating over 2,000 pounds of flour to Hidden Harvest for Michigan food banks. Additionally, they host educational events, such as class trips to their Frankenmuth facility, where students learn about wheat cultivation and milling processes.

With locations spanning Michigan, Indiana, Ohio, New York, North Dakota, and Minnesota, Star of the West maintains a robust presence in the agricultural sector. Facilities include elevators, flour mills, bean processing plants, and agronomy centers, each tailored to regional agricultural outputs. For instance, the Frankenmuth site houses an elevator, flour mill, and ready-to-eat flaking plant, while the Munger, Michigan location specializes in organic bean processing.
